Community safety and emergency preparedness demand the land development strategies outlined in NFPA 1141.

It's impossible to understate the importance of fire protection and sound land use planning in the design of subdivisions, office parks, shopping centers, and other developments in rural and suburban communities. The 2008 edition of NFPA 1141: Fire Protection Infrastructure for Land Development in Suburban and Rural Areas addresses the full range of issues with a complete revision of the 2003 document entitled Fire Protection for Planned Building Groups. As reflected by its new title, the Standard provides recommendations for planning and installing fire protection infrastructure for new developments in a community.

Other critical changes and additions in the 2008 NFPA 1141 include:

• Requirements for road capacity for evacuation
• Added infrastructure requirements for wildland/urban interface areas, drawn from the 2002 edition of NFPA 1144
• Provisions for spacing of buildings to reduce exposure ignitions
• A new provision concerning sheltering residents in case of natural and human-caused disasters

Updated to recognize the rapid development of structures into areas that present unusual characteristics to responding fire agencies, the 2008 edition of NFPA 1141 is essential for fire departments, code authorities, and insurance professionals.
